Carved in the Stone

He searches in stone for someone he once knew

As his little girl looks on through.

The tears in his eyes she does not see

As he looks for a name that had gone overseas,

He was once in the Navy Reserves

And his life he did preserve.

He made several friends but one

Was sent to Vietnam with a gun.

One who crawled through the tunnel

Where he faced the jungle.

One who went into the storm

Where rockets, tanks, and guerillas were the norm.

One who never came home.

Years later he finds the name in the stone

Of someone who never came home.

His daughter plays with her hair.

She could never dream of this nightmare.

They laid at home with a smile

While a loved one slept in the bile.

How could they have known

That he would never come home?

They cracked their jokes.

They played their games.

They casted their votes.

On others, they put their blame
