They told her she would not return to school ever again. As they walked down the street, Mallory’s innocence slowly and painfully began to crumble.
It was winter when we basked in the lights; when we took our chances on the tightrope. I wasn’t there when it snapped.
We followed every footstep those soldiers took. I had memorized exactly where the hatch to the basement was, right beneath Felix’s rug. Finally, the stomping sound of their heavy boots stopped.
